Berman and Bruneau win ASCE Award
Dec 2005 - CSEE PhD candidate Jeffrey Berman and Professor Michel Bruneau were honored by the American Society of Civil Engineers with the J. James R. Croes Medal for their paper entitled: "Plastic Analysis and Design of Steel Plate Shear Walls," which appeared in the November 2003 issue of the ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering. The medal and accompanying certificate are awarded to the author, or authors, of a paper that is judged worthy of special commendation for its merit as a contribution to engineering science.
UB earthquake expert interviewed on CNN
Oct 11, 2005 - Andre Filiatrault, professor of civil, structural and environmental engineering and deputy director of the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research (MCEER), was interviewed on CNN's "Lou Dobbs Tonight." Filiatrault joined a discussion about the earthquake in Pakistan and India and spoke about the need to improve the seismic resilience of buildings in the U.S.

Feb 1, 2005 - The world-renowned statue Hermes with the Infant Dionysos has been equipped with innovative seismic protective devices that will help the 7-foot-high marble statue of the Greek god withstand powerful earthquakes. The protective devices were custom made for the statue based on analysis and tests conducted at the University at Buffalo's earthquake engineering laboratory.
