"I'm going to be really proud to say I came out of this program."
When James started looking at graduate programs during his senior year at Bucknell, he went on the Web and searched for who was doing the kind of science he was interested in. He found what he was looking for in the groundwater group in UB's Department of Civil, Structural, and Environmental Engineering. When he started talking with the groundwater faculty, he discovered that he could qualify for an NSF fellowship, so, coming in, everything was ideal.
Now, five years later, James is starting his search for an academic position in the Northeast. He's finishing his dissertation, on contaminant transport using analytic flow solutions, and he's very happy with his decision to come to UB. "I had a lot of free rein to experiment here," he says, "to experiment, to play with ideas. I had the opportunity to choose my own research."
It will be hard to leave. "I love Buffalo. It's a great place to live."
