"The pioneers of the new technologies in earthquake engineering are here in this department."
Claudia came to UB on the advice of faculty members in her undergraduate program. She says it was a natural choice—even though she does not like winter—because UB is so highly regarded in her field in academic circles around the world; indeed, she says UB's program is not as well appreciated by students in the U.S. as it should be.
Claudia's thesis concerns a new seismic isolation system for bridges. She and a colleague Ph.D. candidate who is working on the same system for buildings share data from experiments on the UB shake table. Her bridge-specific tests of a heavy deck will be among the first to run on the expanded shake table facilities when they open in late 2004.
