"As a graduate student, the most important thing in the world is to be excited about your research."
Hua studied structural control in Shanghai and then worked in an architect's design studio long enough to discover that—in his words—he wasn't the right person for architecture. He looked to the U.S. for additional training in structural control, and UB was the obvious choice because "it's the best in the world."
Once Hua arrived in Buffalo and started talking with CSEE faculty, however, he became interested in the small-scale structural work of the Electronics Packaging Laboratory and decided to go in that direction. Now he's writing a dissertation on the reliability of solder joints under high-density electric current stressing, and he's "very glad" he chose this program. When he's finished, he plans to work in industry: "I want to look into unknown things, but I also want to see outcomes."
Hua calls Buffalo "safe, friendly, and scenic."
